I have learned so much at UH Hilo, not only from my amazing professors, but also from some really spectacular students. It's exciting to think about everything they'll achieve after graduation. I hope the world is ready!
— Kaʻiulani Leialoha Carvalho Matsumoto
Mahalo to my family, teachers, friends, and others for the love, guidance, counseling, warnings, and challenges that helped me become that person who I am today. I appreciate all the support while on this long and untraditional journey. Mahalo e Ke Akua.
— Shayne Leon Kaho'ohiki Pe'a
Mahalo nui loa to my 'ohana and hoaaloha, especially my husband, Christopher, who supported my want to go back to college, helped finance my ambitions, and encouraged me to not give up and put up with me when times got rough. Mahalo to everyone who pushed, provided advice, love, and positive energy for helping make this accomplishment happen. It is not an easy task to take on while juggling life as a mother, full-time employment, and being a full-time college student BUT it was worth it!
— Makanalani Hokuloa Carvalho Guillermo
Thank you, to all the professors, advisors, and fellow students who have helped me along the way. Huge mahalo to my family and friends who have endured school with me and who motivated me to keep going. I am here today because of the continued encouragement and support. It wasnt easy for any of us especially during this pandemic and our lives have been through trials and tribulations throughout Covid. However, it has made us all stronger and we are blessed to be here today. Thank you 😊 💓
— Helen Tak
Journeying through history indeed, changes one's life. And I shall not soon forget the great support I received from family, friends, and the History Department of UH Hilo.
— Robert Combs Wheeler
Wow, I did it!!
As I reflect on my time in college, I am so thankful for everyone in my life that pushed me to continue my education and provided a way for me to do so.
Mom & Robert, thank you for giving me all that you could and believing in my success.
Ava & Lucas, you are always my motivation. Big sis misses and loves you both so much.
Grandma & Grandpa, thank you for allowing us to continue our education in Hawaii and pushing us when we felt like giving up.
Dad, thank you for pushing me to succeed and believing that I could do anything I put my mind to.
To the rest of my family and friends, words can not express how much I value and love the support system that I have. Everyone in my life has played a pivotal role in my success and I love you all!
— Mykaela Cox
I studied at UH Hilo for a year as an exchange student. The professors, staff, and friends at UH Hilo are all kind and very warm people. "いちゃりばちょーでー(Ichariba choodee)" is a word from my hometown in Okinawa. It means "once you meet, you are all brothers," and it is a wish that people who meet each other will get along like brothers. I felt that the people of Hawaii also have this spirit. I was very happy to study at this university, where all the people I met were warm.
— Yoshino Taira
I am an exchange student from Japan. I'm nearing the conclusion of my two semesters of study abroad, which I spent with the support of everyone around me, earning my TESOL certification while having the fun of my life. I'd like to express my gratitude to my professors, the International Student Office, my friends, and everyone else who helped. My favorite ʻŌlelo Noʻeau is “ʻAʻohe pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi. (All knowledge is not learned in one school.)”. What I learned at the University of Hawaii will benefit me for the rest of my life. Mahalo nui loa.
— Tomoka Yarita
Thank you UH Hilo for the memories, experiences, and life lessons. Not only did I gain knowledge, but also important life skills, lifelong mentors and friends. Go to those one on one discussions with the professors it will help you in the long run.
— Griza S. Perez
SO MUCH GRATITUDE to the students I had the privilege to get to know while interning at UH Hilo's counseling center this past year.. I am going to miss you all so much, and probably see you around in the community!
SO MUCH LOVE & THANKS to my family on the mainland as well as my hānai family on island for their love and support these past two years as well as being my main pod squad during the pandemic. (Including my dogs, of course.)
MAHALO NUI LOA to all of the amazing professors in the Counseling Psychology department along with my talented, inspiring, quirky, and steadfast cohort; the past two years just wouldn't have been as enjoyable with anyone else! I look forward to our career (and lives) overlapping as we do good work in Hilo and beyond!
— Samantha Rae Bailo
For me, UH Hilo was a chance for an adventure. I had things I wanted to learn outside of academics, Because of the environment on campus I was able to learn those things while still making achievements in my academic life. I'm glad I took this chance, and for the friends, I made along the way. I can't imagine another way to spend my undergraduate years.
— Annastasia Hurt-Moran
I'd just like to thank my SAC members, UHHSA, and Campus Center workers for all the good times and memories we've shared together <3
— McKenna Yanmiao Green
To my family and mentors who supported my journey these past three years, I wouldn't be here without you. Thank you!
— Stephanie L Hake
Thank you to UH Hilo for a wonderful college experience! I have made many great memories here on the Big Island and Hilo will always have a special place in my heart. This was a second home to me and I want to thank my friends, family, teammates, professors, and coaches for always supporting me and making my time in Hawaii one to remember! I am also glad to be able to have been an athlete here at Hilo and be a part of the start of something special in our basketball program. My time here on the island has come to an end, but now on to the next chapter! Imua Vulcans!

My three years spent in Hilo were an such influential time of change. I am forever grateful for the support of my community- the many early surf sessions, nightly fish fries, and sunset runs truly kept me going when times were hard. Receiving this Master's feels like so much more than a degree. It is a testament to the power of self-advocacy and the knowledge that it is never too late to change your life. Mahalo nui loa to the many mentors and friends who took me in as family and lifted me up!
— Rebecca Jane Ward
I would like to thank my family, classmates, and all my professors for their support throughout my time spent at University of Hawaii at Hilo. With out their support, life would be very difficult during those times. Something I have learned is that everyone you come across on a daily basis will leave some sort of influence on you whether it is a negative or positive influence. Which makes UH Hilo a wonderful place to study because the small class settings allows for better relationships between your classmates. Some of my best memories are of the times we would study together in the lab testing our skills in identifying rocks but also having jokes and good talks.
— David Gilberto Quinones
Thank you to my friends and family- Mom, Dad, Lauryn, Alan, JoJo, and Grandma for being my biggest cheerleaders and supporting me throughout my undergraduate career. Mahalo to Coach Jaime, the cross country team, and athletic staff for giving me the opportunity to run and represent UH Hilo on the cross country course. A huge thank you to all my professors and mentors I've met along the way at UH Hilo for teaching and encouraging me to get where I am today. I could not have made it to graduation without you all! Mahalo!
— Olivia Maya Jarvis

— Junita Jyoti Mendiola Jetley
First, I would like to thank God. Without him, I wouldn't be where I am today. To my parents, thank you for guiding and helping me along this journey. To my sisters, thank you for being there when I needed you the most and making me laugh when times were tough. If it's one thing I'll miss about UH Hilo, it's the supportive community. From the professors, to my classmates, to the amazing staff who work hard to make so much happen. I'll miss the community that has made Hilo feel like home. As for words of wisdom, take it all in while you can. Living in the moment has made me more appreciative of the opportunities and offers that were given at UH Hilo, and life overall. You really don't know what's good until it's gone. Congrats Class of 2022! See ya!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone in my family for their support throughout my time in college. I want to thank my Mom(Stacy) and my Dad(Eddie) for giving me the opportunity to go to UH Hilo. It’s been a privilege to be able to attend a school away from home so thank you so much. I want to thank my grandparents as well for always calling me every night to check on me. You guys are the best. I also want to give a big thanks to the Men’s soccer coaching staff (Paul and Terry) for recruiting me to play here at UH Hilo. I’ve seen myself develop as a player and as a person being on this team. Thank you for always believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself. I’ve made great memories and friends that I will remember for the rest of my life.
— Devan Justin Yoshimura
Mahalo UH Hilo for showing me the true meaning of Aloha these past four years. When I become an elementary teacher, I hope to share the same aloha spirit to my students.
All glory to God!
— Makena Cameron Morris
To my Hilo 'Ohana, thank you for your kindness and unwavering support. Thanks for creating a home away from home these past four years. It will have a lasting impact on the rest of my life.
To my family, thank you for all the sacrifices and guidance because I wouldn't be where I am today without you. No amount of "thank yous" will suffice, but I appreciate the varieties of support that gave me the strength to preserve. I love you!
To the friends I have met, thank you for all the laughs, memories, and adventures. I will cherish you forever.
And to myself, high-five for booking that one way ticket a few years back. Best decision ever!
— Alexandria Shaylynn Parisian
Before UH Hilo I was on the verge of ending my soccer career. But thanks to Coach Gene I ended up playing my last years of soccer with three of my childhood friends, Jodi, Brende, and Piper. I was lucky to go through college with them and make lifelong friends along the way. I'd also like to thank the athletic trainers Kelsie & Trek, who constantly treated, and still treat, my weak kankles. And I’d like to thank my family for always being there to support me at my games, wherever it was, since day one. I appreciate all the times my dad yelled at me to be better, because he saw the best in me. My mom was always there to scrub the mud off my clothes and make sure I was having fun. Lastly, I’d like to thank my teammates for being my friends, otherwise I wouldn’t have any. V’s up!
— Kayla Kanoelani Kunihisa
I think it's safe to say that college was nothing like any of us had expected. I graduated high school with a volcanic eruption just miles from house, which lasted well into my freshman year. A year after that, the pandemic hit, and two years later I still have not seen the inside of a classroom.
Despite all of that, my professors still put their best effort in giving us the education we needed and deserved. While I do wish that CoBE had gone back to 'normal' before I graduated, I am very thankful for the professors that made it feel like we were still in a classroom.
I am grateful for the somewhat limited experiences that I had as a student at UHH. I have made memories here that I will cherish forever.
— Cappi Kaya Winters
ʻAʻohe loaʻa i ka noho wale. Nothing is gained by idleness. Mahalo nui loa to my friends, family, kumu, and fellow haumāna who have supported me throughout this journey. It is because of you all that I stand here today, one step closer to my dreams. Here's to the next degree!

Favorite Memory:
The memory that I cherish the most during my joyous and knowledge-filled years spent at UH Hilo was reading my poem, “Embracing the Rainbow of Diversity” at the Diversity Festival in order teach the importance of creating a more accepting, all-loving, and harmonious world. We are one ‘ohana.

I am thankful for my parents for all their sacrifices and there is no better way to show my appreciation by graduating for them.

The young lady who flew more than 13 thousand kilometers to be here today had no idea of her capabilities. If you were to tell her that she is graduating with a Bachelor's in Pscyhology from Hawaii and has been accepted into Graduate school for her dream career, she would probably laugh at you.
However, UH Hilo has given me the tools to become the woman of my dreams, and for the first time ever, I could not be more proud of myself. I can follow into the pathway I never envisioned for myself, becoming an N.D., Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, practicing natural healing.
I could not be more proud to represent my country today, Brasil eu te amo! E gostaria de agradecer minha familia maravilhosa que sempre me apoiou, mãe, pai, meu querido marido, minha irmãzinha, e todos que nunca pararam de

Thank you, Veronica, for teaching me a lot. And all of my family and kumu and professors and everyone who's help got me here. Maybe it was easy, or just you doing your job, or so small and insignificant, or so long ago, that it was nothing. And it was nothing. It just got me here, that's all.

My favorite memory here at the University of Hawaii at Hilo would have to be the many events that occurred on campus. being a student that at first did not have a car when I first started college I was glad to hear and participate in these on campus activities. These activities allowed me to meet new people and new friends, as well as information about the campus and the different opportunities offered. Mahalo UHH for this!

One of the notable revelations I've had while attending the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo was that I was never falling behind in life. I've come to realize and appreciate that wherever I am at a particular point in my life is where I am suppose to be at that given time. There is no fruit that comes from comparing your life based on others'.
— Kuʻuhiapo Kahilihiwa Villareal Jeong

The biggest memory I have in college was the memories I shared with the friends I made. We had our ups and downs, but most importantly, we were all there for each other during tough times. We helped one another and ensured that no one is left behind. We know that education can be very exacting but a little help and guidance from the people who are also struggling can be reassuring.
— Kristine Villanueva Muerong
For me, the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo was a "home" away from home. This campus has provided me with the necessary foundation I needed to move forward, as a student, as a steward of this ʻāina, and as a future leader for generations to come. Iʻm grateful to have the opportunity to have a college education and plan to give back to the people and places that have raised me. Mahalo nui!

My journey as a nursing student was a real challenge. My family has been my biggest support, inspiration, and reason for this success. I thank my husband and two beautiful girls, Cheska and Nikaela for their unconditional love and support. I thank my parents and siblings who have been my #1 cheerleaders and have always been so proud in everything I do. Ultimately, I thank God Almighty for guiding me throughout this journey.
What I learned during nursing school is that everything is possible with patience, determination and strong support from loved ones. Nursing school is tough but very rewarding. It can be done, indeed! This is just the beginning of a bigger responsibility. Education is a continuous process. Everyday is a learning experience and a chance to enhance self-worth!

I began my journey at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo when I was at my most uncertain. During my time here as an undergraduate and graduate student, I was challenged to think in new ways, met some incredible people, and was supported in my endeavors to travel the world to learn new things. I somehow found my way, moved into the profession of education, and have now earned my Master's of Arts in Teaching with the help and guidance of my family, friends, and many great professors and teachers. Although I may be closing a chapter on my university studies, I look forward to the lifelong learning I have ahead of me.
— Brenna Mary Ann Usher
I have spent the last 7 years attending classes at UH Hilo. First getting my BA in Marine Science and now a Master of Arts in Teaching. I made wonderful life long friends and met so may amazing people over the years, participating in dance club and the National Student Exchange program.
